I Ain't Reading Your 20 Pages of AI-Generated Text Because Neither Did You!

AI is great for a lot of things but please do not use it to generate full-form text or documents and then give it to other people to read!

You are just dumping work on me

I doubt you yourself read the full AI-generated text with the same level of attention as if you had written it.

So now I have to read it with double the cognitive effort because I need to double the AI didn't hallucinate something.

Text length is NOT an asset! It's a liability

The longer the text, the longer you took to convey your point. And the longer other people took to understand it.

A work RFC is not your 5th grade essay assignment. Be objective.

If parts of the text have been written with AI, label them so

Maybe it's ok to have parts of a text written by AI (like automated summaries). But own up to it and label it so.

It's OK to use AI to fix typos and structure dictated text into sentences and paragraphs.

This is the place where AIs genuinely excel, and here's why:

Typos detract from the flow of information so it's helpful to take them out with AI.

Voice-typing, likewise, usually generates a garbled wall of text with no paragraphs or sentences. AI is great to turn that into a proper text separated by paragraphs.

In neither case is the AI generating text though.

Make sure you add to your AI instructions something like this:

"Whenever I ask you to write something, it's ok to restructure the text into sentences, paragraphs and bullet points and fix typos, but NEVER augment what I said with other content even when you really really really think I would want you to. When in doubt, ask for confirmation."

Even with CLEAR instructions like this, sometimes AI will still add slop so be watchful.
